My daughter had strep throat last week and they gave her amoxicillin, but didnt give me or my husband any. l now have all the symptoms of strep throat, but dont have a doctor in this new town we moved to. Is it safe for me to take amoxicillin if its expired? l have some from last year that l never took.

Is it safe to use amoxicillin after the expiration date

Is it safe?
Maybe.

Will it be effective?
Hell no.although the medicinal ingredient will take a LONG time to degrade to unuseability, it will have degraded to the point of being next to useless.

It wo not work well for strep, but it will help with some of the symptoms.try a nice hot toddy (double strength on the booze) before bed. Other than that, u can try gargling with ground-up aspirin water.

Good Luck.

PS: Contact the local hospital about how u can safely dispose of the expired medicines, & then contact the College of Physicians & Surgeons for ur area to see if anyone is taking new patients.

I would find a doctor & get a new prescription.there r a few reasons.

1. You may not have strep throat.it could be something else.
2. If u do have strepthroat the expired medicine might not be strong enough to cure it. (medicine strength weakens over time)
3. It might not be the right dose or there may be a better medicine for you.
4. If u only half-cure ur strep.meaning u get a little better but not all the way.when u relapse the medicne wo not work at all because u will get a resistance to it. And u will have to see a doctor for something stronger.
